So I set up a poll in my Facebook group, and asked the members to vote. I already had a probable choice in the back of my mind, and then that same pattern is the one that won the vote. THEN, Annie herself voted and chose the same pattern as well. That sealed the deal- I would be making Divide and Conquer!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="http://www.byannie.com/divide-and-conquer">Divide and Conquer</a> is a compartmented travel bag that is widely agreed upon to be the most difficult <a href="http://www.byannie.com">ByAnnie</a> project. </div>I had the pleasure of working with Vintage Charm by Kathy Engle. This fabric collection is bright, happy, and beautiful, but is admittedly pretty far out of my comfort zone. I usually go for bold and funky fabrics, rather than dainty florals, but I decided to do a few things to funky this project up a bit. </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">First, I added a fourth fabric. This pattern calls for 3 fabrics, but I wanted a wider, brighter range of colors. I used the fourth fabric to create a pieced border, which is not in the pattern. I used that same yellow to brighten up the inner pages, and used matching yellow zipper slides on the main outer zipper of the bag.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I also decided to add binding to all of the zippered pockets. I think this gives a more polished-looking finish, and also let me bring in some more color.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">On the inner divider pages, I took inspiration from another ByAnnie pattern, <a href="http://www.byannie.com/a-place-for-everything-2">A Place for Everything 2.0</a>. So instead of having one large zipper pocket on each side of each page, I oriented some of the pockets horizontally, and put two on a side. This will allow me to more easily organize smaller items.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">I didn't find this bag to be too terribly difficult. It is bulky and cumbersome, but I took my time and didn't have any problems. It is extremely well-designed, and the pattern is so detailed. If you just take it one step at a time, read carefully, and simply do what it says in the order it says, you'll wind up with a great outcome.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Here is what they include: </div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Overview and Terminology</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Make Handle Units</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Prepare Zippers</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Assemble Bag Front and Back</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Prepare Vinyl Compartments</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Prepare Inner Pocket Pages</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Prepare Zipper Strip Loop</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">- Assemble the Bag</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">All of that being said, I do not recommend this bag as a first project. These projects are the perfect way to familiarize yourself with ByAnnie techniques and terminology, and will set you up for success with all of your future bag making adventures. You can find the ByAnnie Basics here: <a href="http://www.byannie.com/byannie-basics">http://www.byannie.com/byannie-basics</a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Another great way to get into ByAnnie patterns is by joining my Facebook group. We have over 35,000 makers in over 90 countries! It's a fun, positive, inspiring group where people love to post photos of their latest project. You can ask questions and there is pretty much always someone online to answer right away. It's awesome! Batik Ambassador Program - "Fall"ing for AccuQuilt For our October challenge, the Island Batik Ambassadors got to use the amazing AccuQuilt Go Cutter and the North Carolina Star Block on Board.<div><br></div><div>It was suggested that we go with a Fall theme, but it wasn't a requirement. I decided to include all four seasons! I made four small wall hangings- one representing each season- that are meant to hang together. Each one is a 12" square.</div><div><br></div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

The North Carolina Star block is a bit complex, and has a lot of small pieces. </div><br></div>For this month, our challenge was to use a technique that is near and dear to my heart: paper piecing. We were allowed to use foundation paper piecing or English paper piecing, and I chose foundation paper piecing.<div><div><br></div><div>This month I was lucky enough to work with Ornate Gems by Kathy Engle.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div>I'll be honest- I had a heck of a time settling on a pattern for this challenge. I love foundation paper piecing so much, and the choices are so endless! I was a bit overwhelmed and actually had a few false starts before I finally settled on using the Mini Series patterns by Alison Glass and Giucy Giuce- but with a twist. I enlarged the blocks to better show off the beautiful fabric. So my blocks for this project were 7.5" rather than the 4" blocks I used for the Mini Series Sew Along. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div></div><div>And then, disaster struck. </div><div><br></div><div>While opening a jar of salsa, I felt a POP in my wrist and hand, and was almost knocked over by the pain. After lots of bad words and a visit with an orthopedist, I learned that I had injured a tendon pretty badly. The good news was that I didn't need surgery. The bad news was that my pinky finger, ring finger, and wrist on my dominant side would have to remain immobilized for a while. No sewing!</div><div><br></div><div>Thankfully, after lots of rest and ice, the pain began to ease up and I snuck into my sewing room. The first time I tried to sew, it was a no-go because it made the pain worse. But I tried again a few days later and it felt okay. I asked my doctor if there was any reason not to sew, and he said it was fine! So I was able to finish up my quilt top. </div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

For those who are not familiar with this block, a single unit looks like this:</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBmec_n2wa9peB0M1NdarYlrpOS0AlztTxy--EzwdTdJlzqno6hN5E8d2XHchE1cjH2U6-lEUKWUwbxZiOEYT1k91QdKXzjvrQ88rPiEejVkxk736ZHiHdR-tZzyYr0WZdEt8-otyk9oBQJWBeB3zOUwiLl-LvCvf78cnKx5nouydbbEfAJr8sGJY8DA/s467/Screenshot_20230614_142108.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="281" data-original-width="467" height="193" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjBmec_n2wa9peB0M1NdarYlrpOS0AlztTxy--EzwdTdJlzqno6hN5E8d2XHchE1cjH2U6-lEUKWUwbxZiOEYT1k91QdKXzjvrQ88rPiEejVkxk736ZHiHdR-tZzyYr0WZdEt8-otyk9oBQJWBeB3zOUwiLl-LvCvf78cnKx5nouydbbEfAJr8sGJY8DA/s320/Screenshot_20230614_142108.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Now, I will be the first to admit that while I love the look of flying geese projects, I have had far more disasters than successful projects when it comes to this block. But despite this fact, a few years ago I dreamed up a pretty awesome quilt design featuring (you guessed it) flying geese. I knew I had to make the dream a reality one way or another.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">One type of quilt piecing I *am* pretty good at is foundation paper piecing. But going about things that way would mean drafting my own pattern for the first time. I set to work!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">At the time, Quilt Con submission time was drawing close, so I used that as additional motivation and used fabric that had been chosen for one of the Quilt Con challenges. There were several failed attempts, many bad words, and more than a few tears and cocktails. Eventually, though, I got the design to work! I was so relieved and actually cried when my quilt top looked just like my dream. But then (cue Jaws theme) I had to quilt the darn thing.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">I am sad to report that I ruined it with my quilting.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">The combination of being a (very) novice quilter and putting way too much pressure on myself proved to be disastrous. I shoved that quilt in a plastic bag and put it in time out on a shelf in our basement. If you want to see it, you'll have to move two cases of toilet paper (it was on sale at Costco). Perhaps someday I will take it out and attempt to fix it, but that won't be anytime soon. I'm not ready.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">So this challenge provided the spark I needed to give one more attempt at bringing this design to life. I remade the foundation paper piecing templates and created my quilt top successfully on the first try. It looked just like my original dream and I was so relieved, I cried. I don't know why this design has become so important to me, but it has. Accept my weirdness or go away. I am too old to care about being judged.</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Part of this challenge was to use one of the gorgeous packs of precuts that we received back in December, so I chose a stack of 10" squares called Tantalizing Teals *swoon*. I used all 20 of these gorgeous skews. I did have to use a little yardage for the larger triangles. The non-teal fabrics you'll see on my projects (yes, there are two- I'll explain in a moment) are Champagne and Slate, both also from Island Batik, of course!</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_9ddCViPi8iu5ZkP539Jq0TnCJUyMYPlXhicUCJNNdCB8TlrC8JwLiHr8neNJ-Q6KM1QJVKPZvkRL5hOaGzQ4c120J95VZgkbOUCc3uELDX7FTN5koHrln5D0zsac3r6TfJ-fbg8uRk4mj_t59pNQEE8PTTuCbZoiPHuE9OMILe_hJVCDcEPTpdx6fQ/s1474/Tantalizing%20Teal-ST.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1474" data-original-width="1454" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg_9ddCViPi8iu5ZkP539Jq0TnCJUyMYPlXhicUCJNNdCB8TlrC8JwLiHr8neNJ-Q6KM1QJVKPZvkRL5hOaGzQ4c120J95VZgkbOUCc3uELDX7FTN5koHrln5D0zsac3r6TfJ-fbg8uRk4mj_t59pNQEE8PTTuCbZoiPHuE9OMILe_hJVCDcEPTpdx6fQ/s320/Tantalizing%20Teal-ST.jpg" width="316" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6binXJ5byrT6IIEPxbZd0CuCnmqR_k1HwA9PxqR6gz2tg_EAzS9Tsp3bnf2b0gY9OSe-Ismz6KTzQfyFWWYKjwTmI5IxgH6xBd01ai__Z-ij35lsCLnRRlIMWTAD2tA7_FWIE_KBKr6A2h9d1T1EdJYlUZzdvCPCD_ntcYbTVfwNmIc_8rxvPYqj-8g/s1482/Tantalizing%20Teals.png" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1482" data-original-width="1176" height="472" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6binXJ5byrT6IIEPxbZd0CuCnmqR_k1HwA9PxqR6gz2tg_EAzS9Tsp3bnf2b0gY9OSe-Ismz6KTzQfyFWWYKjwTmI5IxgH6xBd01ai__Z-ij35lsCLnRRlIMWTAD2tA7_FWIE_KBKr6A2h9d1T1EdJYlUZzdvCPCD_ntcYbTVfwNmIc_8rxvPYqj-8g/w375-h472/Tantalizing%20Teals.png" width="375" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><br /></div>This time I thought long and hard before attempting the quilting. I actually meditated before I started. I did not want a repeat of The Incident. Eventually I decided to have some mathy fun (after all, I was a math teacher). I quilted in the ditch along the sides of each center triangle, and then extended each of those quilting lines across the entire quilt. This approach produced some really interesting secondary patterns- hooray, geometry! This time I did NOT ruin my project with my quilting!<div><br /></div><div>So, finally, I present to you a quilt so important to me that she has two names. </div><br></div><div>I immediately knew that I would be pairing this lovely thread with fabric in shades of my favorite color, teal. I also knew I would not be making a quilt in the traditional sense. </div><div><br></div><div>At first, I considered making a quilt coat. However, I have almost no experience with garment sewing, and wanted to be sure this project would come out great and be worthy of showing off the thread. So, I decided to do what I do best and make a bag.</div><div><br></div><div>I have been a huge fan of Patterns By Annie for quite a while now, and my By Annie Bag Makers Group on Facebook now has over 33,000 members in 94 countries. We are always sharing lots of photos and trying to come up with our own little creative twists to make the bags even more awesome.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div><br></div><div>I recently started working for ByAnnie, and part of my job is helping customers who have technical questions about the patterns. While I have already completed "more than a few" of the patterns, there are still many I have not yet made. I am doing my best to try all of them so I can better assist the customers.</div><div><br></div><div>As I was pawing through my patterns, I noticed that the tote portion of Annie's new pattern, Night and Day, has a lovely, wide open space that is perfect for showing off a favorite fabric, or, crazy quilting! Plus, I had not made this one yet, so it was an ideal choice.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div><br></div><div>Luckily, I already have quite the collection of luscious Island Batik scraps, and since I tend toward choosing fabrics in the teal/blue/green family, it was easy to quickly come up with a large pile of potential crazy quilt pieces. I also decided to use Cheerio in Bermuda as the lining and accent fabric for both parts of this project.</div><div><br></div><div>I started off by making the tote. Like all ByAnnie patterns, it was extremely well-written and made it easy to produce a professional quality bag. I used ByAnnie hardware in Antique Brass, and ByAnnie zippers in Navy. The rivets are not part of the pattern, but I look for pretty much any opportunity to add rivets to a project because they are fun and easy to add and I think they look awesome.</div><div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I am a huge fan of contrast, so I knew I was not going to make the purse with my shades of teal.</div><div><br></div><div>I sorted my Island Batik scraps by color family and found that I had enough in either the yellow/orange family or the pink/red family.
